I have heard a rumor that CSX is interested in abandoning the former GM mainlind form Gainesville to Pendergrass.

Does anyone know for sure?

The 15 odd miles would make a nice scenic ride and maybe even a dinner train route.

Thanks.

Hi Doug,
CSX is apparently abandoning and ceding to the City of Gainesville, the land north of the diamond with SouRy/NS.
This includes the old shop area (currently the crew room for the GM crews) and the old G&NW wye and whats left of the G&NW line from that point.
That is the information I have.
I have heard nothing of any further abandonment of the GM.

The FRA condemned the trackage north of the diamond several months ago and I believe the decision was made to abandon that part as there is no traffic, just a tie up point for the crew.

Guys - might as well take this opportunity to report that the cosmetic restoration of the Gainesville park hulk was started today with repairing access to the baggage car and electrical power supply and squirting around lots of PB blaster. It was complicated by the unpleasant surprise of the city streets crew tearing up the section of street which provides access to the property. Real disassembly awaits the arrival of the insurance certificate but we are getting started on what we can in the meantime.

The job is a asbestos abatement with repair of the rotted portions of sheet metal and jacket, new wood under the tender tank, lots of small repairs and replacement of some missing pieces, and new paint. The city chose not to pursue a shelter.
