While I'm thinking about foreign steam, does anybody know if any of the american steam that went to the Turkish State Railways-especially the Vulcan 2-10-0's featured in the Lehigh Valley memories tape still exist?

They were tested in pusher service on the LVRR and were manufactured in the late 40's @ the Vulcan Iron Works in Wilkes Barre, Pa. (About 20 miles south of Steamtown)

Mike:

According to Rob Dickinson's page, at least some of these engines (known there as "Skyliners") were operable as recently as last year. See the link below. I hadn't heard the story about these engines being tested on the LV before.

One interesting note- according to David Wardale's book "The Red Devil", American Coal Enterprises (ACE) planned to start up a steam export division in the early 1980's in parallel with their U.S. steam division. The idea was that this group would develop improved "conventional" steam locomotives for export. I.E.- these engines would feature welded boilers, high superheat, improved exhausts, enlarged steam circuits, Gas Producer Combustion Systems, full roller bearings, etc., but no computer controls or condensing as on the ACE 3000. Wardale was recruited to head up this division. Interestingly, Wardale says their most likely customer for their first export engines would have been Turkey. Wardale was highly skeptical that the complex ACE 3000 design could be designed and built within the available time frame and budget, but everyone agreed that modern export steam locomotives had an excellent chance of success, especially in countries like Turkey which still had active steam. Too bad that didn't come about. I imagine these same 2-10-0's would have been an excellent basis for a new steam design.

The video "memories of the Lehigh Valley III) by Mark 1 video , I think, shows these engines extensively. Working as pushers, having 22 towed by a LV Wyoming 4-8-4 w/ an FT pusher and some footage of some sort of ceremony with dignitaries ..fascinating stuff.

Much of the Vulcan Iron Works survives, albeit as Abe N. Solomon scrap metals. I do think the company exists as well-not sure on that point. All in all, a better example of adaptive reuse than the old CNJ station which is a mile or 2 N. NE. of VIW.
