A steam locomotive out of context in a roundhouse or other motive power building? Check out the link below.. The problem with displaying them in front of depots or freight houses is that they are either:

A. left uncovered and exposed to the elements, or

B. sheltered under some sort of canopy which usually compromises the history and aesthetics of the depot site itself.

I've never been to either Roanoke or Williamson, and I'm sure there are plusses and minuses to both sites, but it troubles me deeply that so few among us have any interest in trying to save roundhouses and other historic motive power facilities. There simply could be no more appropriate place to house steam locomotives. In the case of the N&W, there are something like 13 locomotives left (plus some early diesels also), so No. 1218 need not be alone if displayed at Williamson.

If that link didn't work, try this and type in "Williamson" on their search engine. There are over 70 related photos; many are of the N&W shop facilities there.
