Here's a fairly straightforward question: were any cab units from the Central of Georgia preserved anywhere? This would include F-units, E-units, and Alco's.

I don't think so... but if there are any avialable, I'm sure Dave Lathrop would be drooling all over them in a very unsightly manner.

I'm not sure, but a former co-worker who restored John Deere tractors and old farm equipment told me the "old tractor" people have a source. You might start looking on the web in those areas.

How many do you need? And, what thread pitch? The quantity makes a difference on what source to use.
If you just need a few, you can hand make them. If you need a larger quantity, the source I would try is Class C Components. (763)535-0400 ask for Rick Borg. Also, Building Fasteners can probably come up with some. They are a national company, so there should be a branch in your area. Mark D.

If you only need a few, call around to older industrial hardware stores, particularly in rural areas, they may have some in stock. Galvanized square head bolts were common in telephone and power line work in the west until a few years ago, but they have now gone to hex like the rest of the world. If you find galvanized, be aware that the thread is different to allow for the plating.

Another option is to purchase square nuts, and thread some rod as needed. You can even spot weld one end and grind it smooth.

Finally, you can have them made. There are several plants that still have the needed tooling, but they are special order, and are costly (I have paid more than $20.00 a piece for long 7/8" square bolts, and a full set of bolts for a platform on a narrow gauge coach ran over $500.00 (each platform)) Call around to local nut and bolt distributors. Some will act like you are crazy, some will make a few calls and give you a quote. They may offer you either heavy or light head... unlike hex there are two head sizes for each bolt diameter.

McMaster Carr by all means. You need their catalog.

What does this have to do with C of G covered wagons? They weren't built with square head bolts throughout.

The McMaster-Carr web site (www.mcmaster.com/) has the all the listings and, with a little digging, the prices of these bolts. A 12" bolt with nut is pretty cheap. Consult web site for shipping, etc. A few years ago they would sell to individuals only on receipt of a personal check.

Its the only source I ever found for cotton waste for those who like to lubricate their journals.

Another supplier of square head bolts is Fastnal. They make all kind of fasteners; the catalog I've seen is about 2-inches thick. And I recall specifically looking up that they supply square head bolts and nuts. And this was just a couple or three months ago with a new catalog.

The firm as many supply locations; many that seem to produce to order. I'm aware of them being at several locations in California and in Seattle. I recall that they had a map inside the catalog and it seems that it showed distribution sites around the country.

I've been trying, but cannot find a website for the firm. Not everyone does.

I'm hoping you mean wool waste for plane journal bearings, not cotton. Cotton burns rapidly but wool only smolders and it wicks better.

I would like to thank everyone who responded to my question on square head bolts. I have several good leads right now.

Curtis industries has square headed nuts in many sizes in galvanized and black. The sales man that I talked to said the bolts should be available too.

About 5 years ago I bought some bolts from KAR industries. Price was a bit high, but they fit.
