I have watched "From Russia with Love" on UK TV tonight and closely examined the railway scenes. They are in order of presentation in the movie.Bond and Tania depart Istanbul by train watched/chased by agents and baddies. The scene was filmed at Istanbul Sirkeci station. There are overhead catenery wires in view and a French built EMU in the background. At that time the line was electrified through the Istanbul suburbs as far as Halkali. Through trains were hauled on this section by French built electric locos. Although the train departs with loud "chuffing" noises the locomotive is not seen, almost certainly electric. The next shot is a lineside view of the train under wires, again only the coaches are seen. The next lineside shot is on single track, steam hauled. BUT it is a RENFE (Spanish) 4-8-0 hauling a typical Spanish set of coaches.Following this another lineside shot, back in Turkey, with a TCDD "Kriegslok" 2-10-0 hauling a mixed train, very likely filmed in European Turkey. Then comes another shot of the RENFE 4-8-0 on the same train as before but taken on the opposite side of the track with sun lighting it.After this in quite short time the train is seen arriving at "Beograd", in actuality several hundred miles further on. It is night but the loco can clearly be identified as one of the French built lightweight 2-8-0's the TCDD used in European Turkey. There must have been a loco change there as, on departure, the driving wheels and trailing truck of a second series SNCF (France) 141R can be seen. These are the boxpok driving wheels and delta trailing truck mentioned in the original post. The train passes through the night towards "Zagreb". Two shot before there and one after were filmed in the UK. The first shows a rebuilt "Royal Scot" 4-6-0 coming towards the camera, the second an ex LMS class 5 4-6-0 going away and the third the same class 5 coming towards the camera. All shots include a very obvious Midland Railway signalbox. They also have green coaches, a green buffer beam on the Royal Scot loco and a green banded disc "shunt" signal. Buffer beams and disc signals were RED! Someone has been a bit lavish when adding colour. Finally Bond and Tania escape from the train near the Yugoslav/Italy border in the night. Not enough is shown of this loco to enable idendification, but it is certainly European as it has the triangle of marker lights at the front of the loco - it is probably Turkish. There are a couple of other quick shots of the driving wheels of a loco. The coupling rods have adjustment wedges fitted so it is probably either a Spanish or older Turkish loco.Sorry to go on at length, but it was interesting to work out what had been filmed and where.Jim L.
