Hi,

Good news for all of you who are interested in Northern Pacific locomotives.

The Warren McGee collection, which thoroughly documents the road's roster (along with a lot of GN, UP, and Milwaukee Road stuff) has now been catalogued at the Montana Historical Society and is ready for viewing by the public.

The collection of some 40,000 photographs which were taken between 1930 and the 1960s, was donated to MHS about a year and a half ago, and it greatly complements the famous F. Jay Haynes collection which focuses on the NP during the years from 1877 to 1905.

A $15,000 grant from the Northern Pacific Railway Historical Association helped fund the cataloging.

Warren McGee is described in the current issue of MONTANA POST as follows: "A longtime conductor for the Northern Pacific, Warren was meticulous in documenting the history of each image--the subject, date and place it was taken, and other relevant information. His research files alone are a gold mine for railroad enthusiasts."

The MHS archives reference room is open between 1 and 5 pm weekdays or otherwise by appointment. They are located in Helena at 225 N. Roberts Street or can be contacted at:

Montana Historical Society
P.O. Box 201201
Helena, MT 59620-1201

It's a great collection and something I thought many of you might like to know about.

Thats great news Malcolm. The University of Montana at Bozeman I believe has Ron Nixon's photos on a website, will this happen to Warren McGee's photos for those of us not close to Helena, MT? Also, I had the opportunity to have Warren McGee autograph my copy of "The Northern Pacific Railroad of McGee and Nixon" by Richard Green a few years ago when I was in Livingston and that means alot to me.
Thanks for the information
Paul

Hi,

I checked with the Montana Historical Society about the possibility of making the photographs available on line. The cataloging work has been so extensive, that nobody has had a chance to seriously think about creating web page images with them.

Some of the photographs will appear in an article about the McGee collection being prepared for an upcoming ussue of MAINSTREETER, the Northern Pacific Railway Historical AssociationÂ’s magazine. Not sure about the time frame.
