This photo has meaning to me, as we cross these tracks at Montreal West in the van, on the way to our trains at South Junction. Few lines had snazzier commuter trains than CP's in steam. The 4-6-2 is no more, but the coaches, built in 1953 and later modernized to electric heat, were just retired this year by successor AMT. About two dozen are stacked close together off-rail at the railcar rebuilder next to our tracks in LaSalle, and also next to the 20 expressway. One string was still in St Luc Yard recently, lettered TPHX, but I don't know where they went. CP ran steam on this line into 1960.http://abpr.railfan.net/abprphoto.cgi?m ... 58.jpgBudd cars at the same location, eight months later, in 1959:http://abpr.railfan.net/abprphoto.cgi?may04/05-12-04/CP9060atMontrealWestQUE6-5-59.jpg

Bob,I recall hearing that a number of these cars were stored in Montreal off rail, but on their trucks. Is this indeed the case?As an aside, I found it rather amusing (and a bit sad too) that admist all the hullabloo over the 2100 that the withdrawl from service and sale of the last group of steam era commuter coaches on the continent was overlooked.Personally I wish that CP had picked them up for excursion service.Tom Cornillie

Yes, the cars stored off-rail retain their trucks. Can't see from the train if they were damaged by moving them or not.
