Number 457 was built by Alco in 10/1912. That engine is nearly identical to Don Lind's #471 at Annandale, MN. Number 471 was built by Baldwin for the Iowa Central as #429 in 12/1910.

There was also another M&StL 2-8-0, #452, that was sold to Crystal Sugar at the same time as #457, and that engine worked at Crystal Sugar at Chaska, MN, during the beet season, up until about 1959. Coincidentally, Chaska was the home of the Klein brickyard where #471 sat for years waiting for Don Lind to come along and buy it.
