Post subject: The last Alco 16-244 and D&H's "fifth" PA
PostPosted: Wed Dec 19, 2001 11:06 am

Just some speculation about the Alco 16-244 engine located near Philadelphia that was recently listed for sale on ebay. It's not common knowledge, but in 1968 after acquiring the four ex-ATSF PA's, Delaware and Hudson also acquired ex-New Haven PA #0763 from GE where it had been traded in (on U23B's?).

#0763 was completely stripped for parts, including prime mover, trucks, and just about everything else that might have been useful and then scrapped .The 244 prime mover from #0763 was rebuilt and swapped into one of the ex-ATSF PA's, which then had its 244 rebuilt and swapped, etc., etc. This allowed D&H to have a fully rebuilt spare engine on hand.

Now I assume #16-19 went to Morrison-Knudsen with their 244 engines intact in 1974 when they were rebuilt into "PA4"s and had 251 engines installed, and that the original 244's were subsequently scrapped by MK, but what happened to the spare 244 that D&H had and kept on hand at Colonie? Could it have migrated to nearby New Jersey where it awaits a new owner today? If so, it could be THE ORIGINAL ENGINE from one of the four existing ex-ATSF PA's. I know this engine is rated at 2400 hp and that PA's were originally rated at 2000 hp, but could it have been uprated slightly during an ATSF or D&H rebuild?

>Dave,
In the early 1970's D&H 17 had a massive engine failure with it's 16cyl. 244 engine. The shop crew at Colonie installed a 12cyl 244 in the engine because they didn't have a spare. When the PA's went to M-K for rebuilding they all went with there 244 engines, except for the 17, the D&H pulled the 12cyl. 244 out to use in one of the RS-3's( it was put into the 4099).

I don't know what changes if any Alco made in the 16cyl. 244 to get 2400 hp out of it.The PA-2's were rated at 2250 hp, and Alco built six axle road switchers using the the same engine but they were rated for 2400 hp.

Per a D&H insider, the 16 cylinder engines were removed from the locos before shipment to Boise.
They were either sold back to Alco or scrapped-can't remember the details.

There was an engine number published in the ebay ad-so someone should be able to trace it back to a loco.

I suspect that it came from the PRR-based upon the timing and the fact that PRR's PA fleet was traded in on some new Alcos. At that time, Altoona had a salvage operation that would remove the trade-in material (which went into the parts pool) and render the rest of the loco for scrap.

Just some speculation about the Alco 16-244
