Steamtown 3254 as of 6/20/04

Hello All...

Took a ride over to Steamtown yesterday to check on the progress on CN 3254. Found NPS personel working on the 1917 locomotive outside and took a few shots. Spoke with the roundhouse foreman and he told me they hope to move the engine inside and begin installing the drivers today or tommorrow.

I know the plan is to have both steam engines out together through the summer. When their is a trip to Toby and a trip on the Carbondale line their will be Both the 2317 and 3254 and the GP-9 514 all working at the same time. I don't know exactly what the plans are to do with the steam engines in the yard but I have heard some things that sound like they could put on a nice show. I'm sure Crosby will post some photo's, Right Dave

Thank you, I'm looking foward to seeing and working with two locomotives during Railcamp in July, I think Were going to help ready the locomotives in the morning, Should be a great experience.

Sure Aaron...

Certain requirements must be met before I go out and take pictures.

If its of Steamtown they actually have to be going somewhere.

If its of the DL they have to have matching engines.

I haven't taken many pictures around scranton this year...

If we have an EL diner with a Nickel Plate sleeper and a DL&W coach I guess we can't count on you to record it :)

Last I heard 2317 is not allowed out of the yard on account of driver wheel conditions.

Hopefully this has changed.

We were informed in March that we have received an additional $94,000 in TEA funding from Pennsylvania (subject to final passage of the Federal Budget). We believe that there is now enough funding in place to complete the diner. We are working on funds to stock the car properly with china, silver, linens, kitchen tools, etc.

The car (along with NKP sleeper City of Lima and DL&W "Phoebe Snow" coach 318) are at Ozark Mountain Railcar in Forysth, MO. Currently, OMR is removing the arched roof installed by the Erie in 1949 at their Susquehanna shops when they modernized the car. Much of this roof is badly deteriorated and will need to be completely replaced.

I am working with several culinary schools to see if we can develop a partnership where the students will get a unique learning experience and we will gain a reliable supply of cooking and wait staff.

Is the single-deck roof going to be reinstalled?

BTW did Erie install that roof over the original double-deck roof?

Whatever happened to EL diner 747? Is it still around? I remember seeing it on the New hope and Ivyland back in the early 70's but then it went somewhere else.

All of the roof metal is corroded beyond repair, and will be replaced with new sheet metal and curved supports. With the removal of the rusty curved sheet metal, OMR discovered that the Erie had removed a part of the original roof from the top of the side sheet to approximately a depth of 5 to 6 inches all along the original roof. This was apparently done to facilitate application of the new exterior metal along the side of the car that was installed above the belt rail in 1949. With the upper curved roof portion corroded, and the opening in the original roof section, we now have discovered how water was getting into the car.

We plan on restoring the car to its post-1949 "modernization" appearance since we will operate the car as an EL car.

After the New Hope & Ivyland, the car was sold to a railroad construction firm in Ohio. Apparently they set up drafting tables in the dining area. Where and when they used the car I don't know. Sadly, I was recently shown photos of 747 being cut up at a scrap yard in Ashley, PA some time in the early 1980's.

The only other Erie diner to survive, 746, is 10 miles from the nearest railhead in South Carolina.

It was in Ashley? There was a lot of equipment scrapped there in the late 1980's, including the last great collection of 2-bay eastern-road hoppers.

Anyone have pictures of the rolling stock in Ashley to share?
