A man named Richard Shulby, apparently a professor of industrial archeology, is trying to assembly a list of all remaining roundhouses. His e-mail is rshulby@aol.com.
I am really enjoying the coaling tower listings. Think I will assemble it all into a single list and post it under databases. Sometime in the near future.

Here are a few more:
The former Canadian Northern (later Canadian National) roundhouses remain in Hanna and Big Valley, Alberta. Hanna’s (which still has its turntable and service tracks) is now a cattle auction mart. The Big Valley structure is no more than foundation and concrete walls, though it now has historical markers and is cared for by the Canadian Northern Society.
The Grand Trunk Pacific roundhouse in Biggar, Saskatchewan is today part of a turkey farm and holds hundreds of gobblers instead of 4-6-0s and Pacifics.
Kevin
The brick roundhouse on the former GTW at Pontiac, Michigan is still standing, but probably not for long. This is about a 1/3 circle, with a 90-foot turntable still intact. The last machinery, a driving-axle drop table, was removed by Project 1225 for eventual re-erection elsewhere.
At Durand, Michigan, the 90-foot turntable was destroyed in 1998; the full-circle wood roundhouse was demolished in the early 1960's.
At Owosso, Michigan, the concrete foundation of the Ann Arbor roundhouse survives, and was recently excavated. Construction of a small structure to house Project 1225 on this site will commence as soon as possible. Re-use of the roundhouse foundation will be investigated.
At Elberta, Michigan, the extremely-deteriorated ruins of the Ann Arbor roundhouse are still visible. This was a stone building set partially into a hillside.
At East Tawas, Michigan, the extremely well-preserved brick-and-timber roundhouse of the Detroit and Mackinac is still in use.
At Niles, Michigan, the well-preserved concrete Michigan Central roundhouse is in use as a garage and retail store. The turntable was cosmetically restored by the property owner, and turns, although it is too deteriorated to carry locomotives, and there is no connection to the Amtrak line.
At New Buffalo, Michigan, the small Pere Marquette brick-and-timber roundhouse is in use as a store. The 100-foot turntable still exists.
Aarne Frobom
Michigan State Trust for Railway Preservation, Inc.

Does anyone know of more details of the future of the GTW roundhouse at Pontiac? To my knowledge, it is the last extant GTW roundhouse, and even has its coal facility complete. It seems a shame that some of the dozen-or-so extant GTW steamers can't end up there. Has anyone even thought of trying to save this facility? Does anyone besides me care?
There is a new roundhouse in Scranton Pennsylvania. It is a former DL&W roundhouse built in the 1880s. In the 1940s it was seen as not needed and abondoned until 1986 when Steamtown NHS was established. By then most of the building structure had fallen down and the turntable covered in weeds and high grass. So in 1988 work started on the new roundhouse and was completed by 1992 when Steamtown NHS opened. I hope this helps.
Hi All;

I have come across this post and thought I might just update the state of the roundhouse located in Biggar,Sk.

I am currently one of the Co-owners of this building and have been looking for a facility/preservation organization to donate it to but it does carry a clause. When we took over the building in 1973 it was slated for demolition so we had to include a demolition clause on the event we no longer are using it.

I am also in talks with some reclaimed wood firms for the sale/purchase of the Fir beams if I am forced to take it down.

I have only one block sheet off the plans drawn up by CN back in 1942 and are working on trying to get copies of the rest if they still exist.

The building was constructed in two phases, 1908 and 1919 with a face lift from 1942-1947.

Here are some pics;

Imagea partial shot of one of the 4 sections (The roof support beams are the 12"x18" while their supports are thicker as one can see)The wall section illustrated collapsed back in 1969 and was replaced by a wooden wall, the remaining is original.

Kev -

Thanks for the update and pix. The building looks in much better shape than most of the old, unused, roundhouses around today. Would be a shame to see it destroyed. I assume that the turntable is gone. Where is Biggar by the way? Is it near a large city?

Since Kev has renewed this thread, maybe we could get an update on some of the other roundhouses and facilities mentioned herein.

Thanks.
