Former C&NW SD40-2 #6847 (currently patched as UP 3028) has been donated to IRM by the Union Pacific.

Ill have to double check the numbers but there is indeed a UP one preserved already..

Me thinks there is a UP SD40-2 at the Western America Railway Museum in Barstow, CA.

Is there any particular significance to this SD-40-2 or was it just one made available at the right time? No criticism I think its great that ones getting saved. The SD-40 was known as one of the best locomotives made by many a railroader and having run one myself they are pretty good (up to about 30mph) but they pull like a well you know..... I suspect in the next 5-10 years the SD-40 or -2 will be not as plentiful as they are now with the whole "going green" thing. Snap em up now while you can.

I believe the deciding factors were that this is a former CNW unit, still (mostly) in CNW paint, and was stored servicable in December, in a warm climate (Texas). I don't believe there is any particular significance to this particular unit.

An update:
This locomotive, which was still in storage in Texas when this thread was started Thursday, has made it to West Chicago, Il, already. This trip included a 2 yard transfers, which had the locomotive arriving at West Chicago a mere 15 hours after it first arrived at BRC's Clearing yard (for those of you unfamiliar with Chicago terminal operations, this was VERY quick!). Delivery to IRM is expected tommorrow evening.

Many thanks to the UP, and especially to the many fine folks who helped with arranging the donation, and expediting the locos shipment to IRM.

Trivia: If the train from Proviso to West Chicago had its usual power, our CNW SD40-2 was hauled behind the last 2 locomotives still in unpatched CNW paint, GE C44-9Ws 8701 and 8646, which are among the 7 visiting locomotives expected to be on display at IRM's annual "Diesel Days", on July 18 and 19.

I think we can let the "visitors" leave, but we may need to turn off that huge superconducting magnet under the property, in order to "let em out the gate".

It appears that we have had a cancellation, as the list orginally included 2 IC E9A's

There is one other SD-40-2 at the previously mentioned museum in Barstow California UP #9950 ex UP #4320 built as Missouri Pacific #3320

The IRM blog you linked to mentions each piece of equipment having to pay for its space on the property. Could you tell us how IRM calculates this fee?

It's calculated by linear feet of track taken up. For railroad equipment, this is length over coupler pulling faces. I think the current rate is around $75/foot. This system seems odd at face value, but actually works reasonably well to 1) help raise funds for track construction and general maintenance and 2) limit acquisitions somewhat.

...well, okay, it doesn't work THAT well on the second point. :-)

That $75 a foot is for outdoor storage.
Indoor storage is extra, and is generally determined by dividing the total cost of a new barn by the number of usable feet of track in the barn.
