Running the gamut from parts sources to potential museum pieces to "wot the heck?", and not just for Maine either: four F40PH's, one rebuilt for freight. The historic units are a former BAR GP7, No. 100, and BAR GP9, No. 79. The GP7 was built in November 1950 and the GP9 was completed in June 1954.

Auction. Bring money. Online bidding available ("What's in your wallet?").

Interesting to note that the F3A isn't on the list...

A Conrail B23-7? That is a preservation worthy locomotive if for no other reason than ubiquity. I'd bet the CRHS wouldn't turn down a donation of funds to acquire her.

They were the GP9's of their day. This would fill a nice gap in preservation circles; a gap recently created by the newer GE's donated to museums this year. Something to connect the U25 to the Dash 8, no?

I would argue the C39-8s for sale are more important to preserve than the Dash 7, if only for the fact Conrail had only 22 of them, AND they are some of the only remaining C39-8s left. The C39-8 was the first Dash-8 Production model as well.

I would argue as well that the B23-7s have fared much better than C39-8s, and are not in danger of disappearing overnight, unlike the C39-8s.

I would also furthermore hold that Fore River Transportation 102 is a more important Conrail B23-7 to preserve, as it carried the former number of 1980 in its life, along with a painted slogan, stating "Keep It Moving With Conrail".

Just a personal opinion of mine, I would be glad to see a Conrail locomotive preserved either way.

The post U-Boat GE production is really under-preserved with only one Dash 7 and one Dash 8 being preserved. I would argue that of the locomotives being auctioned, at least one of the 12 C30-7s would be worthy for preservation, given that 1137 were built, none of which are technically preserved and that they aren't exactly the easiest things to find anymore (about half of them are in Brazil).

If I recall correctly, there are 2 or 3 Dash 7s preserved, Its just nobody seems to remember them when the discussion is brought up. I know that the Southern Appalachia Railroad Museum has an Ex-Family Lines B23-7, although I do not think it has been restored yet. I also think they have an Ex-Southern B23-7 or U23B. I also remember reading about An SP B30-7 preserved somewhere in Colorado.

We also have 2 Dash 8s in preservation now. NS 3563, a B32-8, located at the Lake Shore Railroad Historical Society's Museum, and UP 1848, a B40-8, at the IRM.

Either way of looking at it though, there are no 6 axle Dash 7s or Dash 8s currently preserved, and, as I can make an argument for the reasons behind the C39-8, I can see the argument for a C30-7 as well.

Also seeing what could be done with a pair of derelict PAs in Mexico to what one has become, and what one will soon become, I am sure that anyone who has the will to see a C30-7 preserved will either grab one here in the US/Canada, or repatriate it from Brazil.

Not likely as they've been retrucked to broad gauge.

We'd love to have the B23-7 or the C39-8, however our treasury doesn't have the capacity right now to do it and without an on-site mechanical inspection, I'd be quite leery of buying what amounts to a large semi-mobile scrap heap. It also brings to mind MM&As reported lack of maintainence policy (I can't confirm, but the story is consistent). It's under review by the CRHS, but unlikely to go anywhere.

By the looks of it,some still retain standard gauge trucks,or no frame extension, and I'm sure it wouldn't be that hard to find some standard gauge Dash 7 or Dash 8 trucks to put under them.

I'm not sure if it's new axles (and brake rigging), new center bolsters (I think that's the correct term), or entirely new trucks. I know the C36-7 and C30-7A units that went to Estonia acquired entirely new trucks when they went to Europe.

One of the locomotives being put up for auction (C30-7 5017) is the one that was on the point of the train that derailed in Lac-Mégantic...

Not quite so fast:
http://www.railwayage.com/index.php/news/canadian-police-seek-to-block-sale-of-ill-fated-mma-locomotive.html?channel=00&utm_source=WhatCounts+Publicaster+Edition&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=RGN+7.25.14&utm_content=Canadian+police+seek+to+block+sale+of+ill-fated+MM%26A+locomotive

This is a tactic I will have to remember, having the Bankruptcy Court auction off the evidence before it gets used against my client.

Negative to that! The lead locomotive in the Lac Megantic accident is being held as potential evidence.

Lets be clear on what is going on here. As of this morning I do not see an order on the Bankruptcy Docket. The auctioneer has stated (correctly)for the press that he has been retained to auction the locomotive and absent an order to the contrary is obligated to do so.

The MM&A (Rail World) is in Chapter 11 proceedings in the United States. it is involved in corollary proceedings in Canada. A US Bank has received the authority to auction certain assets (the locomotives) to pay off the liens. The bank and the auctioneer did the normal due diligence on the assets to be auctioned and no objections were filed. After several news reports of the "Train From Hell" being auctioned le Sûreté du Québec is asking for a hold.

Given that law enforcement interest in bankruptcy proceedings is fairly rare and that this is a matter that that crosses national boundaries there is going to be a bit more than the normal confusion and that the Sûreté cannot merely send a junior prosecutor down to Portland with the application but need to use US counsel et c. If a motion for such an order has been filed and granted in Quebec it still needs to be forwarded to the U.S. Court and the MM&A and the bank would have the opportunity to be heard on the matter. This will mean some delay, probably an additional week or three, before the either the order is granted or the unit sold.

Since they still have a week to hash out the details it will probably be worked out.

The auction was yesterday, wonder if anything made into preservationist hands?
