The City of Elko, Nevada, has ex-Western Pacific GP9 #727 on display in a city park/parking area where the Western Pacific was operated through downtown.

Are there any other Diesel locomotives displayed in city parks?

There is a former Columbia Falls Aluminum Company (former GN) NW3 displayed near the Whitefish, Montana depot, in Great Northern colors.

How intact are any of these, or are they just body shells with trucks under them?

Homewood, IL has IC "GP10" (rebuilt GP9) 8408 and a caboose by the Amtrak station on the CN/IC mainline. It's an empty shell.

I looked under the WP locomotive and it appears to have 3 of the 4 traction motors. No idea about "under the hood."

There are a trio of UP Centennials in city parks:

6900 Kenefick Park, Omaha, NE

6901 Ross Park, Pocatello, ID

6922 Cody Park, North Platte, NE

None of these have anything under the hood.

So the only two operable centennials are the one in the UP heritage fleet, and the one in Portola? (Portola one may need some work to be operable, I don't remember).

There were at least two F7A units in parks in the midwest at one time. They may have succumbed to tornado damage over the years.

Great Northern #229, an Alco RS3, is on display in Schenectady: Google Map location.

There are pictures of the locomotive on RRpicturesarchives.net and the display is described on this bicyclist's blog: Rich's PedalPoint: ALCO Engine - Schenectady

There was a thread here a couple of years ago about some PRR e units that had operated in preservation but were then tubed out for use in a restaurant.

Rochelle Railroad Park (IL) has two Whitcombs on display: a 50 tonner, Hall Printing Co. #5, which I believe is intact, and a little two foot gauge critter, shell only. It's more of a jungle gym for the kids to play on, now.

Brodhead, WI has a MILW FM on display at the depot. I think the prime mover and traction motors are long gone.
