Not to mess up the CPR thread, but it might be a good idea to compile surviving steam tenders, left without locomotives, just to count 'em out and acknowledge they exist. I know there's a I1sa tender at ARRMM, a NYC Hudson tender at Steamtown as well as the CPR Pacific tender. Pennsy used a bunch in wreck train service and liquids storage. LIRR converted an E6s tender to feed their rotary plow, I've seen the old GN Vanderbilt at St. Louis. N&W had a bunch of auxiliaries.

Does a list exist? Are any remaining in service or storage.
What are those in conversion to other services, like RI's plows?
How many and which are "protected" in museums?

If a permanent list doesn't exist, perhaps someone can take it on with our contributions?

There was a similar discussion here not long ago. Sadly no such list of tenders exist. The largest tenders that have been lost to the torch are the two IC2600 tenders. If some son of a bee had not stolen the brass from the trucks they might have found work as water tenders. The damage done is most likely why no one wanted them.

If NS ever wanted to restore 1218 and wanted their tender back from Milw 261. The friends of 261 could go after the Ingomar Montana tender and have a true Milw tender for a A-tank. Well, One can dream anyways.

Do tender tanks/cisterns without frames or trucks count?

If so, Maine narrow gauge fans should be aware that the tender tanks of Sandy River & Rangeley Lakes RR engines 16, 18, and 20 still survive (though in highly deteriorated form) in Phillips, ME.

Illinois Railway Museum has several: from a C&NW 4-8-4, a GTW 4-8-4, and a KCS 2-8-8-0.

I hope some good soul is compiling these as we move down and form a list.

I believe there is one outside Helper, UT.

There are two up on the Black Hills Central in Hill City, SD. One is a slopeback from Lake Superior Terminal & Transfer/Duluth & Northeastern 21 and the other is from some unknown type/owner.

The Colorado Railroad Museum at one point in time had a total of three. One is/was converted Water Car W-493 (which came from 2-8-0 206 "Hillerton"), one was a spare from either one of the ex-IRCA 2-8-0s that came from the Georgetown Loop and the third was a Standard Gauge spare from D&RGW 683 when it was dressed up as D&RG 583.

Feather River Railroad Museum has an intact WP tender, from (if memory serves me) one of the GS engines.

The IRCA tender belongs to IRCA 44, which while dismantled, is scattered around the property. The boiler is in storage in silver plume. The 583 tender belonged to a private individual, and was moved elsewhere a few years back, But I don't recall where

IRMs CNW tender is from a rebuilt heavy pacific for the 400 .

Valley Railroad (Connecticut) 2-8-0 #97 was fitted with a tender that originally was mated to a Central Vermont 0-8-0. The tender was used in work train service by CV, and came to VRR about 1975. In a 1977 re-furbishment of 97, the CV tender replaced the original small Alco-Cooke tender. I'm pretty sure that original tender has been scrapped.
