Mikado now at the Illinois Ry. Museum, in this old undated photo. Was last used on the Bevier & Southern in Missouri (1960s), then sold to Richard Jensen, spending many years in a scrapyard before being saved by IRM.

Ten wheeler built in the company shops at Lincoln, now displayed at the depot there after many years as a park display. Thoroughly refurbished by the late Stan Matthews (Shop Services) several years ago.

Now displayed at Mendota, Illinois. This one, like the 4994, was last used in Colorado, on the Colorado & Southern, in 1959.

Parked at the 7th Street roundhouse of the C&S in Denver, just before donation and delivery to the Colorado RR Museum in Golden, Co.. I think taken in 1963.

Richard Jensen's biggest loss, cut up in a dispute about 1972. Anyone have photos of it being scrapped?

Also now part of IRM's collection, after spending many years in PR work for the Burlington, then in a park at Aurora, Illinois. Only CB&Q K2 class extant.

Should be pulled out of the museum in Colorado and renovated by and for operations on the BNSF. What happened to 5632 was unforgiveable.

Even though I was born 7 years after she died, I don't think I could bear to see a picture like that, not after reading all the stories and seeing all the pictures I've seen on her excursion career.

I was agahast when I read about 5 years ago that she was gone.

CB&Q 5632 was painted gold twice, both times in 1964. The first time was for the 100th anniversary of the Aurora to Chicago mainline. She pulled a full stainless steel train from Chicago to Aurora on Wednesday, May 20, 1964, with dignitaries destined to a banquet in Aurora. Burlington open platform stainless office car "Burlington" carried President Harry Murphy and his guests on the rear. On Saturday, May 23, she handled a suburban train from Chicago to Aurora and return that carried over 3,500 passengers in suburban equipment (mostly gallery cars). On Novenber 1, 1964 she was again painted gold and traveled to Kansas City to celebrate the 50th anniversary of KCT. She ran light back to Galesburg after the Kansas City junket and never steamed again. Thank goodness there are four other O5s still extant but 5632 was truly one-of-a-kind and is still my all time favorite steam locomotive. 1964 seems like yesterday when I think about the trips I rode behind her.

Richard Jenkins own two steam locomotives that met similar fates; both classics and both fan trip legends. Be careful when you cite the scrappings of these engines. 5632 was a Burlington O5 Northern; a huge engine that ran miles and miles on the Burlington, by the Burlington. 5629 was a GTW Pacific, and a prettier light Pacific probably never ran. Though the numbers were close, the locomotives were unrelated. For whatever reasons, and I've heard several version to the stories ranging from stubborn intransigence on the part of Jenkins, to mean-spiritedness by loathsome, insignificant, bureaucrats who just wanted to show their authority, both locomotives were destroyed. In the case of the 5629, museums and other sponsors even rallied to purchase the loco, to no avail. In the case of the CB&Q Northern, a court ruled in favor of Jenkins, but the loco was torched and gone by then, with no way to bring her back.
Why did Jenkins have such horrible luck with these engines? I have no idea. I believe he died shortly after his engines, broken, impoverished, and disspirited. A true tragedy of the age of steam revival.

Anyway, 5629 was a GTW 4-6-2 and 5632 was a CB&Q 4-8-4. Close numbers, but that's all. Oh, another coinicidence is that railfan and website builder Richard Jenkins, who you see these days, is not the same railfan. I wrote of above.

The name of the owner of these locomotives, I believe, was Dick Jensen - not Jenkins!

I was privileged to see her in the gold dress during a midnight visit to the Clyde yard (Cicero, IL) enginehouse one Friday night before the trip (one of them). It was a ghostly, surreal image that remains in my mind of what appeared to be a very large golden toylike model loco; yet which was alive, occasionally panting, radiating heat, and still breathing. Alas the light was dim and poor and I believe photos were strictly out of the question due to the 'unofficial' nature of our visit.

Our group understanding is that this was a temporary type of paint which was due to be washed off with steam and hot water the following week. We all wondered what would happen if it rained the day of the trip. Maybe this part is myth and rumor - can anyone confirm this part of the story?

Was anything salvaged from 5629? I was but a lad of 12 when she met her demise, but my dad took me down to see her when we heard. I always wondered if anything survived, although I remember what a hack job that was done on her. Might make the pain a bit better to know something useful survived.
