Does anyone know if this locomotive (Baldwin 53234/1920) from the defunct Thompson Winery is the one that has been acquired for the Sanfilippo Collection in Barrington Hills (near Chicago), IL? I understand they have a steam locomotive numbered 18, but have not been able to determine which one it is.

They are also restoring a wooden coach, and are planning to operate them on the grounds of the collection. It is a totally amazing collection, which includes a 1915 steam roller, a traction engine, a working steam carriage, numerous stationary engines, and hundreds of musical instruments, ranging from Edison photographs to a huge "Eden Palais" steam powered Salon Carousel. It is nearly all beautifully restored, and housed in a Victoria-styled house and barn. There is no website for the collection; and it is open to private viewings only, I believe.

Do not forget the Collection's crown jewel, a fully operational 4-manual 80-rank theatre pipe organ in the main music hall!!

Jasper would be offended because you left off one manual. It is a 5/80, mostly Wurlitzer, but with pipe ranks from several other organ builders.

Dear James:
The steam locomotive in Jasper's collection is the Grant c/n 1489(?) auctioned off from the Henry Ford Museum collection in October 1985 (see page 303 of "The Steam Locomotive Directory of North America").
To the best of my knowledge, Thompson's ex-Lee Tidewater No. 18 is still at Monee, owned by and occationally being worked on by his son Brian.

This is, I believe, a former narrow guage Grant 27 ton mogul originally built for the Texas and StLouis RR in 1880 or so. It was "backdated" and standard guaged by Henry Ford. It went thru the big auction that Greenfield village had about 1987. I saw it when it was in the collection of a gentleman in South Texas. He sold it about 10 or 12 years ago. Has really weird tender trucks; wooden beams with rubber "balls" to act in place of springs on the equalizers.

Real cute engine though. I think it should be somewhere along the Cotton Belt, though.

PS You still have to admire it being in company with a threatre organ!

Hardin Southern Railroad's Monee Steam Story

It would be interesting if it were the C&NW replica coach for the Pioneer. This was owned by a doctor, I believe in his backyard in Arlington Heights or Palatine.

That coach was rotted beyond salve, however the trucks were obtained by someone for another replica coach of that period that is currently under construction.

Now that someone has dredged my original thread up, does anyone know where I can obtain details on the stationary steam engines in the same collection? I am now working on a stationary steam engine database for ISSES; and have scant few details on the engines here. I think many of them are already listed at other locations.

(In addition to the steam locomotive and organs mentioned earlier in this thread, they also have several stationary steam engines, a steam car, and a steam traction engine.)
