I must say that this topic certainly brings back to me very enjoyable memories.I had an aunt that lived near 103rd street and Fernwood Park area from1946 until 1952 that I usually visited for two weeks in the summers of those years.I was 14 and 15 years old during the fair and visited it about 4 or 5 times each summer.I had a lot of paper from the fair that unfortunately got lost over a period of time.I am sure I will never see anything like it again.

This is why I'm posting these, I'm rewarded that these bring back memories for you. I'm just fortunate that my Dad kept everything and in excellent condition.

Don't even apologize. We aren't one dimensional people who only care about trains. I enjoy hearing your stories - even if outside train-universe.

Steve -

Seeing all this Rock Island advertising for the 1948 edition of the Fair, makes me wonder if the railroad displayed one of their newest 4-8-4's on one of the display tracks. The oil burners (5100-5109) had been built in 1944 and the ten coal burners (5110-5119) in 1946. Certainly these were considered "modern" steamers at that time. Wonder if anyone knows if one of them was displayed?

Somewhere on the Internet I have seen a list of (maybe) all the locomotives that were displayed at the RR Fair, but I can't find it now. I don't recall that the CRI&P had any 4-8-4s there.

Richard -

Let me know if you find that list. I'd like to know what engines were there in both `48 and `49. It doesn't surprise me that if the Rock hadn't sent one of their newer Northerns there. I had heard that they tried to cancel the order for the 10 coal burners, but Alco held them to the contract. Don't know if that is true or not, but it wouldn't surprise me if it was.

Regarding the German 42 class locomotive; it appearently went to Fort Patrick Henry at the same time that the captured V-8 steam locomotive 19.1001 went to be studied and have measurements taken:

Later, Don Ross encountered 19.1001 and a 52 class at Ft. Eustis in 1952; both were scrapped there. I would imagine that the 42 class was brought there as well and scrapped.

(Look under "Deutsche Reichsbahn".)

The pamphlet has no mention of locomotives on display, just the two cars, Fiesta and the observation car.

I never seen anything like that before. Thank you for posting that link. Fascinating.
