This is an interesting one from the University of Illinois and Railroads.

Although it has no reference to the Railroad Fair I found it in the collection and suspect it was handed out there.

Apparently the University of Illinois in cooperation with the Peoria and Eastern Railroad produced the worlds' first railway dynomometer car back in 1898.

Never knew such creatures existed.

The IC dynamometer car, which has the same instrument in it as the first car shown in the brochure, is at the Museum of Transportation near St. Louis. A few rolls of tracings were found in the car and are in the library there as well. The car is located under the big Roberts Building shed along one of the platforms and its interior is lit up for visitors.

Steve, you're coming up with really interesting material.

I have added your IC and C&O turbine leaflets to my Railroad Fair site. Many thanks.

You are very welcome. I'm learning as I do this so I'm benefiting as I go.

While looking for something else, I came across this:

The horses in the show should have been a little more discreet. . .

Note that the writer was Edward Hungerford.

Good find -- though that documentary was already linked on my Railroad Fair web page. Edward Hungerford wrote a book called "A Railroad for Tomorrow" that we used to own, but it disappeared long ago. It would be interesting to compare his predictions with today's realities. As I recall, not much of what he foresaw actually came about. One thing I recall was that he didn't think the Milwaukee's line across Iowa would survive, except for a policy of maintaining rail service to all towns with 1,000 or more people. Of course, he was right in one respect -- the line is long gone.

This pamphlet states that the model railroad was on display at the fair. I wonder what ever happened to that layout.
