None of the 45 UP 4-8-4's were built with smoke deflectors. The smoke deflectors were added to the engines over a period of several years after a number of experiments with different smoke deflector designs. All the 800's got them before the end of steam.

There are three other Union Pacific 4-8-4's still in existence. They all have smoke deflectors. They include FEF-1 814 at Council Bluffs, IA, FEF-2 833 in Ogden, UT, and FEF-3 838 in the Cheyenne steam shop, which is being used as a parts source for 844.
