It may have been the "red, white and blue" B&M combine, which was the grounded office car at the Riverside site in Vt. At Scranton, the car simply was plopped onto LIRR Ping-Pong trucks. It had no steps, or much else underneath, for that matter.

The St. J car was, as I recall, the curved-baggage-door-molding shortie combine, which was still on the TTX flat it rode down from Vt. on. It was in pretty good shape 5-6 years ago, and NPS wanted to hang onto it then. Hope someone competent got it.

That doesn't sound so bad then. I frankly found it hard to believe they would destroy such an old car as the ex-St. J car I mentioned. Glad I was wrong.

I would like too say one thing, even though a lot of equipment was not from the U.S. that F. Nelson Blount did get? Alot did come from Canada, as we know, this is all IN A CENTS something that belongs to all of us, if you ever been too the old STEAMTOWN in Bellows Falls, Vt you will maybe know what I am trying to say? No it is not all U.S. equipment, some is Canadian, but I can see putting to scrap, the steam loco's CNR 5288,, CPR,, 2929 apartilly the NPS, does not care about preservation, If they can scarp a B&M combine without thinking for exsample,,,,, then what is next?

For the record, all the equipment at Tobyhanna was offered, gratis, to any group that would show up and take it or pieces of it away--the offer was extended on this very forum as well as through ARM and other channels.

Nothing was done without thinking, and any and all interested parties had an opportunity to stake their claim--as TVRM did.

We had considered the combine but chose not to acquire it after determining its condition. Costs of its transpotation and restoration made it prohibitive for our proposed use as opposed to purchasing another car in better condition.

Steamtown was helpful and completely forthright.

I can only suppose there were some federal requirements which dealt with sale of surplus for scrap that made seperating hardware from the carbody impossible and the scrap dealer did what he wanted after purchasing the car.

I talked with the contactor when he was cutting up the car. (right in broad daylight not hid from anyone) He had posted all the hardware, trucks included, on the internet with not one inquiry. The trucks were not original (see H. Pincus message) but from LIRR. The car had smoked windows because it was once used as an office and sat on the ground. So I hope this helps with any mis-information out there or thoughts.
