that's correct, the D&M 8 steamed into Dearborn with at least a baggage car, combine, observation car and caboose, all which were wooden in 1979. Only the combine, caboose and Baldwin 0-6-0 remain on site. I imagine that must have been a long rough ride rolling that distance on an 0-6-0.I also heard that the C&O 1601 arrived to the Henry Ford Museum in 1956 under her own power.

CPR 2839 was steamed south on the B&O from PA to Alexandria, VA to start excursion service on Southern Railway in 1979. If I recall correctly, it was March, and the engine then took an ferry move excursion south to Atlanta for further inspection and preparation for the 1979 season.Wesley

I believe one of the Snoqualamie mallets was moved under its own power from the point of acquisition. I believe it had a short period of static display at its first post-service location, then needed minor repairs before operating to the museum.

Oh, by the way, duh. 4501 was purchased direct from service to excursion status. Also Strasburg 90, although what are we discussing again? Is it moving direct from in service to preservation, or is it physically moving under own power? I don't know if 90 was steamed or moved dead to Strasburg.

The Suwanee steamboat at Greenfield Village is fired by hand using coal in a scotch marine boiler. It is a true 65' sternwheeler.It is currently wrapped up for the winter though since it's kind of cold in Michigan for a boat ride!

For trolleys:The first 3 cars for the Pennsylvania Rwy. Museum at Arden, Pa. arrived under their own power from Pittsburgh in 1954, but one had been trucked from its former home on West Penn Rwys. to live rail earlier.Many of the early cars at the Branford Electric Rwy., East Haven, Conn. arived under power, or at least on their own wheels. Here, also, the foreign cars had earlier been transfered by truck or flatcar from former homes. There's an Urban Legend that the motorman of a New York trolley stopped during the delivery and asked a New Haven policeman how to get to Time Square!The trolley parlor car in the Covington, Ky. park was run under power as close to the park as possible, but trucked the last few feet.
