Sheesh, John.

You are really making it hard on me for February! I was already looking for a Winter Kromer, a pair of Shuron Ronsir eyeglasses, and thinking of shaving the beard. What more do you want??

Funny you should mention beards, Steve - that's the one thing that jumps out at me after looking over lots of photos. No facial hair, period.

As for the rest, I'm sure you'll do fine.

(For those scratching their heads, the following excerpt from our February '08 trip announcement should explain:

To take maximum advantage of this opportunity, all participants will travel between photo locations by car, and the interiors of Pere Marquette caboose A-909 (on the train) and Ann Arbor caboose 2839 (placed in a siding along the line) will be fitted out authentically, down to the last detail. Everything - and we do mean EVERYTHING - will appear as it was in the steam era. The Conductor's paperwork, 1930s-vintage egg cartons and lard buckets, bacon wrapped in white butcher paper, the graniteware washbasin, bedding . . . the only modern element in the caboose will be you and your camera. We will have a strict “one photographer at a time in the caboose” rule in effect. Use your time as you wish: pose the crew going about their duties, or just enjoy the ride.

This option features: (a) special daytime and night time photo opportunities in the caboose; (b) a special runby on Saturday featuring PM 1225; (c) the opportunity to ride between photo locations in the caboose (limit one segment per extra-fare purchase); (d) lunch cooked in the caboose by the crew.

The winter Kromer is an easy one - $21.00 at Rehmann's in Chesaning. They always have them in stock. I'm figuring on raiding the Lion's club collection bin for glasses. I 'spose I can shave off the mustache, that'll give the grand daughters something to talk about. Clothes might be easy, depending on who the engineer is. I might end up just wearing a window sill around my neck.

A question and a comment.. did the SRC ex-DT&I caboose get repainted in CNR lettering for this shoot?

And, those sideburns are more 70s than 30s-40s....

Well, I'm not going to ask anyone to shave their facial hair or change their hairstlyle - I do have my limits ;)

SRC 12's lettering was covered over and painted, and the CN lettering applied in vinyl, for Pete Lerro's photo special. I assume the vinyl will come off in the not-too-distant future.

I wouldn't be averse to participating in a more permanent repaint, though:

When I was 16 years old volunteering at the Greenville Railroad Park in Greenville, PA an elderly man came to visit one day. He was a retired PRR engineer and told several stories about his days on the Pennsy. One particularly interesting story was how he reported to work on day in Harrisburg to take a train east. The motive power assigned to him seemed a bit odd so he went in to ask the clerk. "Are you sure about the power for this train?", he asks. ""Yes, sure. You've got a 4800 today", replies the clerk. "Well then, do you have a 200 mile long extension cord that I can borrow?"

Reminds me of the punch line of a True Tale of the Rail from Clyde "Rocky" Hayes of Durand, MI; one of my first steam locomotive engineers at the Huck.

". . . and you should have seen that conductor heading toward the head end, wearing a caboose door for a necktie!"

For those not from greater Mid-Michigan, that's pronounced Chesa-NING. And if your better half is anything like mine Fred, shave that stash, and I think you'll put, John, Steve AND me in the doghouse with you, and no, since were not in Colorado or PA, that's not the one on the back of the tender......
