I agree with John. Even though I have never found the S-160s to be very aesthetically pleasing, I will say I do enjoy the stack talk having ridden behind Great Smoky Mountain Railroads 1702 and Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum's 610, even though Steve Freer said in a previous post (http://rypn.sunserver.com/forum/viewtop ... ght=#79952)
that 610 was not classified as an S-160. Which makes me ask the question, what characteristics distinguished the 610 from the other S160s? One obvious difference I see in comparing the 610 to 1702 is the 610 has a separate sandbox as well as steamdome, where as it appears both are contained under one large covering on the 1702 and other S-160s.

also omits 610 from the list of surviving S160s, I will commend TVRM on the job they've done to improve the 610's cosmetic appearance as compared to it's as-built appearance.

I'm actually off to Chattanooga to ride the last scheduled Autumn Leaf Special for 2007 to Summerville this Saturday. I'm looking forward to it as it's been 9 years since I last rode the trip on which 610 and 4501 doubleheaded in September 1998 before 4501 was placed on display at the musuem's East Chattanooga shops. I'm looking forward to seeing the turntable in Summerville, Georgia in operation and look forward to the 610 pulling the train all the way (even with diesel assistance) instead of being towed backwards to Chattanooga as it had been prior to the Summerville turntable's installation.

Anyway I hope that the 557 finds a good home.

This locomotive has been evaluated by a professional steam locomotive restoration company and it is has shown very little use on the locomotive. It is estimated that for around $150,000-$250,000 this locomotive could be put back into operation. The US Army used it in training troops on how to repair a steam locmotive so it has had a ton of work done to it with very very little use. One of the things that the Alaska Railroad did to SOME of their S-160's, is put the headlight down into the center of the boiler front. This had a tendency to "hide" the offset smokebox door making for a better looking engine. Unfortunately, I can't seem to find a photo of one of these ARR modified 2-8-0's on the internet. Anyone got one they could post?

I looked on Google Earth and found the locomotive. I can not tell from the photos if this engine is on live track.
