This, I believe, is the only surviving W class N&W 2-8-0. I believe there are a couple of G or G-1 class N&W 2-8-0's still around; numbers 6 and 7 I think, and maybe one other one. Perhaps someone can help me here.

Les

Correct, #6 is at VA Museum of Transport in Roanoke and #7 is in Bluefield City Park, Bluefield, VA. According to my records, N&W 2-8-0 #11 is at Olin-Matheson, Saltville, VA.

Actually, the "G" at Saltville is N&W #305, built by Roanoke Machine Works in 1892. She was renumbered "11" after her sale to Mathieson Alkali in 1922. I was last in Saltville in 2003. She is now under cover, and is one of the most original 19th century engines around. Mathieson didn't do too much in the way of modernizing her after they bought her.

The locomotives look like they have had their lagging and 'insulation'
removed. Does this make it easier/cheaper for the VMT to move
them to their site? What preparations have they made to get these
locomotives out of the path of development? Has any useful help
been offered to them yet? Are we going to dig deep to help to
move these things this summer?

For those that are closer to this issue, why do they not just lay panel track up to the locomotives...roll a ttx under them and be done with it? A single lift, no real moving of the locomotives. Is this not possible?

Sure, it's possible. Got a blank check you're offering?

Folks, for the umpteenth time, it's less about the physical aspects of moving the locos than it is about the FINANCIAL ones. The Virginia Museum of Transportation is in dire enough financial straits without taking on the liability of these locos' move. Basically, the cheap solutions aren't feasible (physically or politically--you can't get NS to "look the other way"), and the feasible/possible solutions (Hulcher, flat cars, etc. ) aren't cheap.

Work on the fundraising, or creating monies for the project that weren't in existence before (foundation grants, government grants, even moving the locos as a military training exercise). Then talk. What about matching grant proposals from the likes of the N&W Historical Society, the NRHS, or even Kalmbach or Carstens?
