Warren,
Good job! Authentic looking. Is that where you get the water for the porta-potty? :-)

When I asked Marty at regional TRAIN meeting held at the Huckleberry, they thought the water tower came from Indiana, but I'm not sure that the town it came from or RR was common knowledge. I'm curious if anyone has further information on it. I think the actual quote was that it came from northern Indiana.

M&StL tank (circa 1901) is still standing at Carver, MN. As of last fall, Quincy & Torch Lake tank at Hancock, MI was still standing. It is square with a coal-fired heater. Its fate seems precarious. It is shown on the first page of this site:

The Carroll Park & Western tourist line near Bloomsburg, Pa. had for years a rebuilt wooden tank, reputedly from the PRR Northumberland, Pa. yards; though the operation died in the mid-1970s, last I recall the tank was STILL there, possibly still in use for something or another. Now, if only the North Shore RR ever went to steam operation........

This tank isn't unique, but it's getting close. En route to the RRPCA conference in St. Louis some years ago I came across an IC tank still standing and festooned with icicles in southwestern Illinois. I know some folks at IRM were aware of it, but I don't know its current status.

Aarne -

I ran across these photos of an IC wooden water tank in Alma, Illinois and wondered if this is the one you were referring to:

The photos were taken 3 years ago when the tank was apparently still used by the local water district. I hope it's still there.

Back in the 1980's when I visited CNJ 113 there was one or two (it's been almost 30 years) water tanks on the other side of the valley from where 113 was parked. I assume gone?

The Lawndale tank still exists behind the now shuttered Cleveland Mills in Lawndale, NC.

The base of the ET&WNC Bemberg plant stands relocated at the Doe River Gorge campground in Hampton, TN.

The ex-Reading Company wooden water tank on the Bethlehem Branch in Rockhill, PA still stands. It owes it's longevity to the fact that the nearby quarry used it up until a number of years ago. The quarry is now closed (though may soon reopen) and the tank is empty. The track passing it is now served by East Penn Railroad.

Wellll...... the base of the ET&WNC tank DID stand at the Doe River Gorge Camp for many years, but when it became unsafe, it was carefully measured before being taken down. Actually, after removing a few bolts, it fell over as the crew working on it waited for the backhoe to give it a push! Many of the parts were measured before being scrapped, while others were set aside for future use.

By the way, the track in the gorge is still in use throughout the summer for campers, and on many Saturdays a short (8-ton Plymouth + 2 open passenger cars [ex-6-Flags Atlanta, ex-D&RG cut down box cars]) train runs 1.3 miles into the heart of the gorge up the 2.5% grade.

That's what I get for not getting over to the Gorge for the past 2 years. Dang! Any track rehab happening between Pardee Point and the river? I haven't seen an update on the Tweetsie group, or talked to Mark Milbourne in awhile.

Thanks Phil!

Besides the usual replacement of ties here & there, and tamping, etc., we did do one big project this spring. Just outside the first tunnel, there were several rock falls. After removing 150+ feet of track, a lot of loose rock was removed. The roadbed was regraded, a new ballast bed was laid, new ties were placed, and the rail replaced. About 150+ feet of brand new track is now in place as you leave the first tunnel! Mark & I and a few helpers had our work cut out for us!

Above Pardee Point, track is has been upgraded for another .5 mile for speeders only (to some camp activities).

It would be nice to get a steam locomotive so we would have a reason to rebuild the water tank (getting this thread back on subject!).

There is a wooden water tank still standing that was on the Big Creek and Telocaset which was a short line that ran from the company mill town of Pondosa to a connection with the UP main at Telocaset. In earler times the rr also ran out of the mill into the timber. The tank can be seen by taking Government Gulch Rd. from Hwy 237 (former Hwy 30) past Telocaset. It stands back in a field to the east of the UP main a mile or so past the summit going toward North Powder. I think the rail line was abandoned about 1959+-, and steam had been gone for a few years at least. I have a couple photos taken from a distance, but not sure how to post them on the board.[/img]

Beautiful old Frisco water tank in Beaumont, Kansas:

If this IS an old SLSF water tank, it's amazing that it is still standing, and in such good condition. The Frisco dieselized on February 29, 1952 when 2-8-2 #4018 completed a turn on the local freight between Birmingham, Alabama and Bessemer, Alabama. Other Frisco steam ran later than that in non-company service; but no St. Louis-San Francisco steam locomotive turned a revenue wheel for the company after 4018 arrived that night in Birmingham. Fortunately #4018 was preserved in a Birmingham park. And 56 years later, this old wooden water tank still stands as another monument to Frisco steam.

Was searching the internet tonight and found a photo of this SLSF tank in Beaumont, Kansas. Wondered if it had ever been mentioned on RyPN and thanks to the SEARCH feature, I found this old thread that I had started! Memory is going fast folks!!! Anyway, the new photo I found stated that the tank had been built in 1885. Can that be right? If so, that tank sure looks good for being almost 130 years old! Also, the photo showed that the remains of an old standpipe was located just down from the wood tank and that a 6 stall roundhouse had once existed in Beaumont. A bit of additional info to be sure.

As mine was the last post on this thread back in '08 prior to the new one, I will just add an update that the the Big Creek and Telocasset tank is no more. Probably been gone for 2 or 3 years now. View and photograph these kind of unprotected landmarks while you can.

The wooden water tank in North Freedom, WI at the Mid-Continent Railway Museum was originally constructed by the Milwaukee Road and used at Oconomowoc, Wisconsin. It was moved to North Freedom in 1972. The museum built the steel support framework from scratch.
The tank has been empty since 2000 when steam last ran at Mid-Continent and has seriously deteriorated. With steam on its way back next year we are trying desperately to find someone who can help us rebuild it.
