Before recovering sunken locomotives there are a few points to consider.
If they have been immersed for a long time they may require electrolytic rust removal. This is a rust conversion process, without it iron may disintegrate on extended exposure to air.
This would be a case of making sure you have enough capital to not only remove the locomotives but also give them the proper treatment. This requires a tank big enough to hold them and as long as three years. Ten more years under water will hurt them less then six months exposure, untreated. This process is being used on the Civil War sub Hunley.
Also donÂ’t assume that you can raise them without a permit of some sort, those days are about over.
I would love to see them properly restored for display, there are so few really old ones left.

Maybe that huge collection is part of the problem?

Yeah, yeah, I know.. they took all the stuff no one else wanted and we should thank them that we have the rotting hulks at all.

No excuse for having NO deaquisition policy.

Actually had considered this given we are looking at conservation needs for a civil war ironclad. These appear conveniently sized to be electrolycized in a regular suburban swimming pool. Any volunteers?
