Also with the wood the engine is planned to be kept in the main roundhouse. So the wood will not be out in the elements. I think pine is too soft so that is why i would go with a nice hardwood.

Mahogany would obviously be the best choice, but Steamtown used white oak on the windows of the CNJ combine, and that'll probably be ok as long as there's a good coat of paint on it. When I was getting a new front door for my home, I had initially chosen red oak, but I was cautioned against it for this climate. Strangely enough, fir was recommended.

Ash makes a nice window. Whatever wood you use, preservative must be applied and maintained over time. I've had pressure treated pine decks that have lasted for a couple decades with care. C of G had a creosoting plant that treated not only bridge timbers, but also architectural millwork such as exterior doors and window frames before installation.
