Going up thread a bit, who actually "owns" RYPN?

The Railway Preservation News owns it, which shares an address with David Collison, the webmaster, and possibly an officer with the corporation if it still exists. (It may not)

I think it's interesting that the most active participant in the lap seam controversy threads (which I think are a waste of time seeing as how there's been no useful conclusion) hasn't responded to this thread.

So you think that discussing an issue is a waste of time if you can't come to a useful conclusion? There's no value in raising awareness of the issue, and possibly encouraging addtional research and study on the question? Seems a bit harsh...

Sorry, I mis-stated my opinion: I think THESE PARTICULAR RECENT THREADS about the lap seam issue seem to have generated more name-calling, innuendo, and rancor than actual useful information. Discussion of issues, even if it's not ultimately definitive, is definitely useful if it's done in a civil way.

You haven't been keeping up with the posts on the K4 in Pennsylvania much, have you?

I mean, that "missing" ex-Amtrak RS3m in Ohio is drivel to a lot of folks, but not to the preservationist that's been promised the loco or its parts.......

Drivel? Yep,sure is. Who's to say it isn't in a good place now? The amount of time the unit has been "missing" is from what Fritz said is close to a year. Where was "Mr. Preservationist" when it mattered? And why would you cut up a good locomotive for another? I ran this unit and inspected it in the past and other than surface rust and some plumbing is an interesting unit in need of a little TLC and would make a great locomotive.
Another thing, Why is the "preservationist" going through a "middle man" instead of just posting himself? So yes I would think this has little to do with preservation.

I open, read and follow threads of interest to me. I have not opened, read or followed the lap seam boiler thread because I have no interest in it. I therefore cannot comment on any name calling if it indeed occured. I might suggest that the readers on this site be a little more selective in what thread they follow. It might lead to a better understanding of what this site is all about. And for the record, I am in favor of railway preservation; all aspects including traction, freight, passenger, structures, steam, diesel, etc. After all, isn't it all part of the overall railway preservation idea?

For the record:

1) I'm deliberately obscuring or "modifying" some of the specifics of the issues in question: there are at least two sides to this issue of the "missing" loco (three if you count NS or whoever retrieved or scrapped it), I'm not privy to all the details thereof, and I'm not getting into who's doing what with what resources. Maybe he wants to sell it intact; maybe he wants to use it; maybe he wants to part it out; maybe he wants to assert ownership when someone else is claiming ownership and trying to sell it............ not my business. All I'm doing is helping out a friend.

From what I understand, he was supposedly offered the loco by someone who said he owned it in trade for parts/services/whatever, and in attempting to find it to inspect it to see if it would satisfy the deal, it turned up missing..........

(Yeah, yeah, I agree, we all look like "Sanford & Son" junkyard dealers in this. Unfortunately, darned few of us in this business have completely "clean" hands in this sordid underbelly of rail preservation. Ever seen a title or legal deed for a locomotive or passenger car?)

2) You ask why he doesn't post himself. For the same reasons that a lot of folks on here insist on using pseudonyms. He doesn't need others knowing this aspect of his business interests. This individual has bought and sold a few locomotives now in preservation, and assists a LOT of places we know well in technical and parts matters behind the scenes.

Besides which, his computer time is limited, and his hands usually so greasy from locomotive maintenance that he kills keyboards. <:-)

I put out a simple appeal for assistance in a matter that should, in the long run, help at least one preservation project. It appears that someone, instead, is "clogging the posts with useless drivel" about that post............. which again drives my point: to one guy, it's drivel; to another, it's money and survival. Isn't it MUCH more important whether or not the paint scheme exactly replicates the old PRR/LV/whatever? [/sarcasm]
