David -

Glad you were able to get parts from the old Stillwell's at French Lick. Did Whitewater Valley ever get the damaged end of Erie 2634 repaired and the car restored to service? Also, you mentioned purchasing 3 Erie 2600's that were in storage at Steamtown back in 2010. Did those cars ever get moved to Indiana?

Thanks.

This is going off on a tangent, but I believe the Terre Haute battery locomotive (http://www.flickr.com/photos/8226029@N06/3319955663/) was in the dead line along with those Stillwell cars. Any idea whether it was cut up too?

The Black River Super Gon (AKA Flexible Flyer) did indeed get scrapped a few years ago. The other two BR&W Stillwells wound up at a restaurant on Route 22 in Whitehouse Station NJ; I'm not sure if they are still there, though.

Another Stillwell was part of the Morris County Central roster. When MCC moved from Whippany to Newfoundland (both in NJ) they left the car behind. Morristown and Erie (Whippany River et al) used the car as a stationary snack bar. The side sheets were so rotted out at the bottom that they were covered over by horizontal 2 by 6s. I also recall that there was no brake equipment underneath, things like a UC valve, reservoirs and brake cylinder.

Out of curiosity, does anyone know of a good source of drawings/blueprints for these cars?

Thanks

To answer a couple of these questions,

Whitewater Valley's 2420 is not in service at this time and will get its proper trucks from one of the cars at the Indiana Railway Museum. 2634 has not had any work done to the end damaged in a derailment several years ago partially because of your next question.

The Whitewater made several attempts to acquire and move the three 2600 series cars that were sold for scrap by Steamtown. Floods in the area and the apparent loss of lease at RMDI created a situation in which the cars were cut up without our knowledge or consent. Consequently, parts that we thought we would have gained to repair 2634 did not materialize as planned.

On the drawing / blueprint question, maybe start here: http://gelwood.railfan.net/el/pax/paxbook.html . If you are specifically interested in the ACF 2600 series cars, the Museum of Transportation has many drawings, though none of the trucks for these cars. If anyone knows of a source of truck drawings for any of the Stillwell series, we are very interested in obtaining copies, scans, etc. As far as drawings for the 2300 and 2400 series cars I haven't any leads. Again, any information found would be appreciated.

On the car that was at Whippany, someone in the past had mentioned to me that a single 2600 series truck may still be on the property somewhere, perhaps that car was a 2600 series car. Is it possible that this truck might be available if it still does exist? This could be very useful in getting 2634 back together.

Lastly on the battery electric, I don't think it was scrapped with the Stillwell group, but I don't know where it is being kept at this point. I think IRM may be cutting up some 40' boxcars in the near future, may be worth checking in with them as many changes appear to be taking place down there.

Photo of Stillwell number 2174 in Whippany dated 2/73. Appears to have air tanks.

Was this the one that was left behind?

Trying to answer a query that arose because of another discussion elsewhere, and bringing this old thread back from the dead:

Has at least one Erie Stillwell been preserved AS AN ERIE CAR, and not as a consumable, expendable passenger car??

In other news, I think one of the former Gettysburg Stillwells has surfaced, in derelict condition along the former Western Md. main outside Smithburg, Md., again the subject of someone who wants to fix it up as "a hang-out for visitors":

The cars in question are still at the location, and the former restaurant is now a gardening store. Although I haven't had a chance to stop by yet during their business hours to be sure what they sell exactly.

Preserved, yes, albeit not restored: http://www.rgvrrm.org/about/railroad/erie2328/

It appears nobody has mentioned the surviving London and Port Stanley interurbans as of yet. #4 and #8 are at Halton County:

http://hcry.org/portfolio-items/london-port-stanley-railway-8/

#10 is at the Canadian Railway Museum,

and #14 is at Elgin County:

Thread on Erie Stillwell cars. Canadian interurbans. Is there a tie-in? Explanation welcome.

Les,

Look at the photograph. The L&PS cars were built to Stillwell design. The linked photo doesn't show it, but the roof line and arrangement of windows is a dead giveaway.

Oooow, those have to be rough. They've been hiding in the woods there for at least forty years now. I saw them from a distance maybe fifteen years ago, and they were completely overgrown then.
