Hey Ted - 2 Shay's come to mind that might be what you were thinking of. The Shay at Heston is former NMLCo #7 / OLC #7. That's a pretty good sized Shay - 3 trucks and approx 60T. The other I'm thinking of is the Santa Barbara Tie & Pole at Embudo, NM. It went to the Pioche Pacific in NV and was displayed near Las Vegas for many years but is now in Washington State, I believe. It is small, but still in the 24T range.

I live about half a block from the site one of the better-known backyard operations: Grizzly Flats RR, the pride and joy of the late Ward Kimball. From our front yard (in San Gabriel, CA) you could hear Chloe's whistle during the occasional steam-ups. Mr. Kimball planned ahead for his eventual passing, and donated his 36" gauge collection to Orange Empire Ry. Museum (oerm.org). He even provided for an engine house which now contains other relics of the narrow gauge railways, and even a modern gasoline-engined industrial switcher that moves the various exhibits around as needed.
