I documented 75 surviving steam shovels worldwide; 8 of them still mounted on rails, in my Surviving World Steam Project.

Alaskalands has a preserved shovel, the Sloss Furnance site, and the Western Museum of Mining & Industry in Colorado Springs are some additional sites that have preserved tracked steam shovels. I have a 75 ton Bucyrus shovel listed as preserved at the Panama Canal; Ceal Tingley Memorial Park has a Vulcan shovel from 1906 mounted on rails. A similiar shovel is also preserved in Cedar Point Park, Likely, BC.

10-15 years ago there was a Marion steam shovel located in a quarry in Kentucky. It was reputed to be one of the shovels used on the Panama Canal project, and was originally rail-mounted. At the time, it was mounted on wheels, allegedly from a kit supplied by Marion upon its resale.

There was some interest in moving the shovel to the Kentucky Railway Museum, but nothing ever came of the deal. I wonder if she still even exists. She may be, as one poster has often said, "too big to scrap."

No, it is defunct for now. I let the domain go a few years ago due to technical and medical issues. I hope to bring it back in the near future.
