This is available on Netflix as a DVD. I looked it up and watched it on Friday. It was a very pleasant movie, one I wish I’d heard of long before now (and here I thought I’d heard of all the decent RR movies out there).

What percent of piston travel does an engine cut out before she starts her run?

What's a Samson? (Sampson?)

What's a petticoat pipe?

What's the purpose of the firebox throat plate?

When's an engine bark?

What's a stuffing gland?

How long's a J-rod?

How's (unintelligible) (sounds like "3-o'clock blower")

How's (untintelligible)

Will you answer my questions, man?

Wonder if the late Rev. Awdry was the inspiration for the railfan minister?

Sorry about the mis-spelling...

No, but I suspect The Rev. W. AWDRY might have been:

But he was hardly the only possible inspiration:

Of the various sources and formats available for this movie, can anyone tell us which is the most complete?

I can't say that I've ever seen an edited version so likely they are all complete. I have also never seen any "extras" though the one at Historic Rail above seems to have added some unrelated material. I'm not familiar with that distributor. I believe it was handled by Anchor Bay which also had many of the other, more famous Ealing comedies but I don't see them nor TT on their website so rights must have shifted to someone else. That could explain the varying cover art.

As for formats in the technical sense, this is 1.37 : 1 so no worries about widescreen issues and so far as I am aware it's not yet available in Blu-ray so DVD is the format of choice for the appropriate region (1 for USA).
