Buried, the iron hull is still subject to corrosion and in fact once the hull below the water line would dissappear then the rust would continue up the sides. Burying the a ship to the water line is better than leaving it in the water unless you have funds for periodic drydock work. The only sure way then is to place the ship on supports out of the water and out of the dirt.
