It runs; needs a set of new batteries and a general going-over. Not high on the list right now, but someday soon, perhaps. Loco is in generally very good condition.

Hey Howard, wasn't a C424 supposed to arrive for service? I think the number is 4243.

In due time. Needed a "tune up" prior to starting its career on the Naugy.

On another note, is 4243 keeping it's current paint?

Although the 25 ton is not a priority the RMNE has several new younger members who have never turned a wrench on a locomotive before, something tiney like that just might be the perfect project.

Yah, doesn't that refer to the work that she needs on the airbrakes?

Dylan,

A tune up is just that. There a few components which need to be updated/refurbished/replaced to ensure a succesful career on the Naugatuck. You and I have had the paint discussion before. Paint is generally at the bottom of the list for any operational locomotive, especially for one that has a fine coat already.

Rowan,

Your idea is well taken, although there are a variety of other opportunities to "turn a wrench" which would be more conducive to futhering the museum's mission. The "quarter pounder" is a neat locomotive and will provide a valuable service someday as a shop switcher but it cannot pull heavyweight cars down the mainline at speed. Priorities, my dear boy!

Alright, another question; What's the word on the Alco Century? Is it still getting compressor work, or is it going to be shipped from New York soon?

Once you come out from behind the computer and enter the real world, you will see that things happen when they happen; many variables enter into schedules and plans.

You ask a lot of questions. What do you do to contribute in any serious, positive way? You have attained the fame you seek, but perhaps not in the way you meant to.

Unless you have time, money, and expertise, please be patient. When we have official word from its owner, we will pass it via proper channels.

And now that the school year is about over, some people will have even MORE computer time on their hands. Or is this the forum where members are 'rated' on the sheer number of posts they make, regardless of quality? Hate to see it happen here-

I agree. One of the things I find valuable about RYPN is the high signal to noise ratio. I'd hate to see that number decline due to, how do I put this gently, over-enthusiasm.

RYPN has helped me greatly with my quest for knowledge and understanding of preservation topics, both theoretical ("does this item belong in our collection"), and practical ("how do we move a car with friction bearings in 2011"). This has come from a long term commitment to reading the things posted here, and intentionally not chiming in on items I do not know about.

The judgement to do that has come from experience and my understandings of social grace.

I don't want RYPN to lose its value of being a place to learn about these things, but I sure would hate to see it devolve into a stream of "what's the story with this thing I'm interested in this hour?" type posts.

Dylan,

You have been offered several invites to the RMNE on this forum. However I offer a suggestion that could be just as educational and provide additional credibility in the preservation field as well as a foot in the door to several organizations. Have you thought about the NRHS Railcamp? If you have thought about it, great, however there are organizations who offer scholarships to Railcamp, and even though, its probably too late for this year you could start preparing for the next one. I think that you could channel some of your enthusiasm through this experience in a most positive way, and learn some basic restoration skills...

Sincerely
Mike L
