Congrats on a beautiful restoration. Now all you need is a "'B" unit to go with it and the UP cars. Maybe a swap with one of OERMs 2 RSD12 for a E9B with the Illinois Railway Museum could work.

Just dreamin'

Wes

I agree that 942 needs a B-unit. If only the P&W would replace the E9B power car 668 with an E8 or E9A unit with generator, then they wouldn't need the 668 and their business train would look better. Might be worth looking into. Several of the former BN units are available at LTE in Ohio...

I confused UP E9B 963B with 970B, which I recall was thought to be the correct number at first...

Ya see Marty, people are never satisfied. Ya got a gorgeous E-8, but now it needs a B unit. If you get that and restore it, then you'll need another A unit to go with it. But having a restored A-B-A unit pulling a measly 4 cars would look ridiculous so you'll need a bunch more UP passenger cars... :-)

Well, in the interest of eating my crow while warm, I think I had the horn bit only half right. After going back and doing a little homework it looks like the most common horn would have been a Leslie S-3-L or perhaps its kissing cousin, the Prime 920. I could have sworn that I had seen some S-5-Ts pictured somewhere, but can't come up with it at this point. I know UP used the five chimes, but apparently not on the Es.

Should be an easy trick to come up with a fairly nice, older, S-3-L and not be too bad on the pocket book. If I can help, let me know.

Speaking of E's, has anything happened to that BN/WSMTD E9AM empty shell that was the donor unit for the IRM/WSOR E9B unit?

From what info I have, P&W power car 668 is former UP E9B 952-B.

It would be a pretty major project to return this former locomotive to its original appearance. The batten and panel siding system has been replaced with an all-welded skin. Wisconsin Southern did an admirable job with their former UP E9B, but it lacks the admittedly problematic, but characteristic, battens and screws. Perhaps dummy versions could be added on top of the welded skin?

B-units are extremely rare now. I hope we don't loose any more.

Speaking of rare, while not typical, it was not unheard of for UP to field single E units at the head of trains.

I believe the WSOR unit was reskinned by the contractor who turned it into a boiler car (most likely ICG / Paducah Shops).

Here it is long ago at IRM:

I believe the only surviving E8/9 B-units are the four UP and one IC (became Alaska power car - not sure of its status) Rare units indeed....
