Who came up with "railbed" for the ground upon which a track was or will run. It is a railROAD so roadbed should suffice. But inevitably, in any news item about a rail to trail situation it crops up.

Steven, thanks for the additional details. I will watch for use of this term.

It is curious that it comes up at this time. I was recently discussing the PTC project implementation with the manager of an agency and the position reporting requirements of the PTL program came up in conversation. The terminology for some of these new features is still emerging.
