I used my moderator superpowers to more accurately rename the topic an may have accidentally removed a post or two in the process. I apologize.

I don't think anyone here can blame ya for doing what your here to do. *Tips Hat*

To get back to a question asked about failure of axles and whatnot earlier (being someone who has no knowledge of this and is curious) a quick google search turned up some interesting reads on the issue of failure and fatigue. "Failure Rate of Railcar Axles" is what I used as my search.

One of the links I found. http://www.saylor.org/site/wp-content/u ... 33.3.3.pdf

I'll never complain about you removing posts, Tom. I'm not a censor, but I recognize the existence of "4chan effect", in which boards get out of control if ****posting (otherwise known as "the cancer") is not stopped. There's a big difference between "censoring content important to freedom of thought" and deleting/moving content that is in the wrong place.

As for the subject matter, I agree it's highly relevant to RyPN, but I see no point to the thread if there isn't content!

I agree with those who hate "see the trainorders thread". One shouldn't assume "we all" have a TO membership. One can barely assume that we all subscribe to TRAINS (Kalmbach forums). Generally, referring or linking to content behind a paywall (be it Netflix or the New York Times) is a bad idea because you get a lopsided discussion here, where only a few can SEE the content being discussed. Better to summarize in a way permitted by Fair Use.

I know 40+ year old cars have to get a major truck teardown, inspection, and rebuild. How are axles handled? How do they get inspected? Is there a maximum age? Are they subject to fatigue cracking or, barring any specific damage, are they good indefinitely and the failure rate of old axles is no worse than new ones?

During truck tear downs for Amtrak and other purposes, we UT shoot the axles for defects. All other requirements are referenced here:

At 8:26 PM 27 Nov the Iowa Pacific Holdings PV cars Baton Rouge and Pontchatrain Club departed Tuscola, IL on the eastbound CSX freight toward Crisman, IL. The Baton Rouge will continue to Avon Yard, IN and finally Beech Grove for examination, etc as a result of the broken axle incident in Tuscola on the northbound City of New Orleans on 17 Nov. The Pontchatrain Club will return on the westbound CSX freight thru Tuscola to Decatur in the next day or so to be forwarded to Chicago by NS.

Just so you know....you can read the Trainorders posts as a non member you just can't see large versions of the pictures or see any posted video. It is a pretty good resource for railroad information on a countrywide basis.

You also can't read past the first page if the topic goes long. More Internet real estate to traverse....who has all the time?

FWIW I saw an IC painted passenger car in a freight train on the CN/IC main near I-94 on Friday while riding Metra/Electric. I didn't see the name nor determine which way they were going as it was stopped and as I just caught it out of the corner of my eye, had not noticed if the south end had power or a FRED. North end was on the connector to the east, to the line that crosses near 95th St.

No, you can't, and no, it isn't.

You're a TO member so you do not grasp just how UNuseful it is when you're on the outside looking in. Log out and try it! You can only see page 1 of discussion, and given the amount of blah-blah tolerated on there, that means you won't see much especially on breaking news. The thumbnails are so small as to be unuseful. It's like being on the Yahoo homepage but you can't click on anything LOL!

Sorry for ragging on TO, but I recognize their game. The page 1 text is there to rank them on Google search results, not to be a resource. The limited text, the thumbnails, all is a tease to upsell you. Even the signup process smacks of NLP, not showing the price until page 2 of signup. Who does that? I post online in a dozen genres, and "railfanning" is the only one with a paysite. Huh??? The others manage to have vibrant social communities without that. Needless to say I don't like head games, especially unnecessary ones. That's my axe.

But in general, you should not link to content which is behind a paywall, as that is not democratic to this forum. Generally they will have linked to free content, link to that same free content, and we can have our own discussion about content everyone can see.

We've certainly detoured from the subject of this thread to a discussion on the relative value of a membership on TO.

The free market is never wrong and the folks have voted with their feet and wallets and have made the TO site the most active railfan site by far so it must be doing a lot right.

I visit it daily and infrequently post on it and find it to be a useful resource for keeping up with the industrys goings on.

Sorry, I'm not trying to make this a pro-vs-anti-TO thread. I just wanted to disclose my biases.

I'm talking about whether you should crosspost from paysites to here. I'm saying you should not.

Because it is impossible for the RyPN community to have an intelligent discussion about content only some of us can see. (and one didn't, did it?) The paysite members already get that content, so they don't need the link. And it's discourteous to everyone else.

Don't crosspost to paysites. Start a new discussion here from scratch.
