Anybody found the plates referenced in the books? So far up to Ch. 1.5, it mentions Plate 1 and Plate 2, with none found. I checked the usual spots these should be found to no avail. One of which is supposedly a diagram of Porta's first design.

We should really have a "Red Devil" reading group or book club, with bi-weekly Skype meetings, etc to discuss what we've learned from the book.

Try page 171. "Plate" refers to photographs.

I'm glad to see you new owners are enjoying the book so much. I still remember receiving mine back in 1998 (Wow! Has it been THAT long ago?). I sat in our living room for most of a Friday night leafing through it periodically going WOW!, HOLY CRAP!, etc. while my wife gave me annoyed looks.

On a side note, I just checked Amazon.com and there are 2 original printings for sale in the UK at $1198 (!!!!) each...

Not sure if this is how all the books are shipped, but here's what I found on the porch a few days ago....

These books get much more impressive once you open the covers and start to read them. I wouldn't worry too much about the outside or packing materials.

I have a special reason for being interested in the packaging--my dad was a postal clerk for many years. And regarding the eye-opening price for "first edition" copies--one of my friends in the music business had one of her LP albums reissued as a CD. When these were sold out, it became a "collector's item" and copies were listed on Amazon for $160. It's nice to know that your CDs are prized, but my friend wouldn't see a dime of that.

Agreed. I find myself fascinated by the concept of air-cooled valve bushings and gas producer fireboxes.
