Greetings all,

Is a reduced cost anticipated via the two piece box construction versus the manner in which boxes were fabricated (or simply modified) on 4449, 1522, 630, 1702 and the fifth? ( the identity of which escapes me)

I am somewhat surprised to see the wheelset being machined on something other than the wheel lathe? There must be a story add to why.....yes?

Cheers, Jason

I have a question for the Strasburg Folk. Back in January I saw a photo of 7312 undergoing restoration and behind it were SP 2-6-0 #1744's drivers. I'm trying to give a formal update on the Rio Grande Scenic's progress with the 1744 and am wondering was it jus tthe drivers there getting turned and trued or was there more to it, thanks!

1522 used two piece boxes which were cast up in OR by a Doyle McCormack source and we machined them to final fit. I think they follow the same design he used on the '49. Worked like a champ. We replaced the wheelsets with 33" Amtrak wheels and machined the boxes to fit. I don't know what Doyle used on the trailing truck, but we modified our existing boxes to accommodate the roller bearings. Did the same on the tender trucks.

Whoever replied to the comment on Strasburg's end stated those drivers were 1744's. I believe you when you say they weren't there because you'd obviously know if they had been but the picture is misleading then.

For what it is worth,I count 4 sets of drivers in the facebook photo. Given that SLRG 1744 is a 2-6-0 and SLRG 18 is a 2-8-0, Iwould vote for the drivers belonging to 18.

I'd love to hear more about the roller bearing conversions, especially the ones for inside bearings!

Are there bearings available to fit in the pedestals, or did you have to modify them?
