Right, and no early withdrawal, correct?

For this sake of this discussion, it's really not important. You don't probably have a lot of good options for a measly $300.

But it got me to wondering how endowments work in general. How do they invest to generate on-going revenue? Stocks, Bonds, CD's? They all have varying levels of risk and reward.

What happens when your museum endowment is backed by $2 million in Enron shares? Even seemingly solid investments like banks have gone bad. Of course you can simply put in a savings account and earn so little interest that it costs them more to mail you the statement...

From what little I do know about endowments, I seem to be of the impression that these questions have no easy answer and are one of the hard choices that needs to be made. Can anyone shed more light on the subject?

On some CDs, the interest can be withdrawn or paid automatically at certain times. Get one where that schedule

at various banks. Some brokerage houses also market Insured Bank CDs, if you can distract them annuities and
other riskier products.
