Versailes (pronounced "verh-sales"), Kentucky.

I always thought it was pronounced Ver-sigh.

In France, maybe. But never in Kentucky.

Because Kentucky also has New Madrid (Mad-rid) Fault, Athens-Boonesboro (A-thens), among others. Places are named to honor other places, but consonantal drift takes it's toll since the 1790's.

Location: Somewhere east of Prescott, AZ along the old Santa Fe "Prescott & Eastern"
As someone whose mum came from there, let me clarify:

I dunno what they do in California, but in Pennsylvania it's pronounced British-style:

"LAN-kihs-ter"

And LNER locos were serviced at Doncaster, "DON-kihs-ter". But, no, Worcestershire is pronounced "WORSE-ter-sheer".

While I'm not involved at BGRM, an did not take the picture, I did see where they've just done a very nice cosmetic restoration on their IC GP-8, 7738. Perhaps others can tell us more. It certainly appears that they're working hard to get their act together of late. Perhaps there's hope for KY rail preservation after all. Congrats to BGRM!

Not mentioned is the fact that ICG #7738 started out life as Reading GP-7 #610. As for BGRM getting their act together, they restored the west end of the line out to the end of their owned trackage allowing riders to detrain for a good view of Young's High Bridge. In addition to ICG 7738, they have added air conditioned lightweight coaches; C&NW #3478 (AC&F) and ACL #203 (Budd), both of which once also ran on Amtrak. And the Leviathan recently paid a visit bringing steam back to the line. So yes, I'd say that things do look good for Kentucky rail preservation.

7738 is "mostly" done. We realize there are some details that are not correct, like the black vs. brown lettering, but that was a known compromise for durability of the lettering vs. correct coloring that would fade quickly. Other items are the way they are due to FRA regs and such. We still operate 7738 so what we can do or not do is up to our inspectors interpretation of the CFR's regulating. We don't argue or nitpick things with those who regulate. BGRM as a whole has definitely turned things around. Although our active volunteer group isn't as large as we would like, it's a dedicated small group. The end of 2014 saw us setting our highest ridership numbers ever. More riders means more income, and we did well enough in 2014 that we have surplus funds now ready for spring projects. Winter is a slow time as we don't have any indoor facilities, but that's another project we are working on. We will continue working on details of 7738 as weather and time allow, but it will be a slower push than the overall paint job was. Personally I can't wait to get our replica Oscitrol light built and back on the brow... I'm attaching a pic of her properly weathered after a few months in the elements and several excursion runs under her belt.
