You don't need any of that with brick against masonry since they are basically the same material held together by the usual material that holds them to themselves, grout. Brick is just more masonry, there's no dissimilar relationship there.

There was a brick over terra cotta block boom in the 1930s for large structures. Most everything smaller and residential was brick veneer over a wood frame. I had a job tearing the face brick off a building being demolished to salvage for one of my projects......and found that a meat cleaver did a fine job of knocking off the mortar.
