Wow,thats bad news,if anyone had the money it would have been Jerry,someone will end up with them(20 years from now when they need full teardown)and still be stored out doors

I simply cannot fathom why owners of steam locomotives fail to understand that buyers have not only purchase price to consider, but the cost of rehab, transport and stabling to consider-and that only a few can actually do something besides stuff and mount them- so that makes the market thin and uncertain. Oh well.

It would seem that the best home(s) for the engines would be in Canada, although I have no idea how much interest there would be, or what resources the Canadians could bring to the project. I do hope the owners can reach an agreement with somebody, somewhere.

Same reason a person will bring a custom motorcycle or a classic car with modern conveniences to a pawn shop and demand the actual market value, plus an extra $50,000. They want to at least get their money back. Plus, sentimentality always drives purchase prices sky high.

If the current owner purchased them for X dollars then they want to sell for X dollars plus appreciation from the last 20/whatever years. Normally there's a large difference between the scrap value, asking value, and actual value of something this large. As the old adage roughly goes though the actual value is only what the buyer and the seller agree on.

I had a chance yesterday through a connection of family member's friend to go take a look at the locomotives in Verona. By chance Larry's daughter Sally showed up a little bit after us to continue removing the tarps off of the locomotives in preparation for movement. From a trained fireman to a student fireman, the two of us shared interesting stories, experiences, and practices about firing, especially Danish vs. American practices!
The coaches have been split into two groups and are going to two different locations. The locomotives are also going to leave the property, apparently having been purchased by someone (unfortunately not AofS). She would not tell us the final destination of the pieces, but allowed us to explore every piece in great detail. The locomotives look to be in fairly good condition! Only thing left on the property soon will be the caboose, which the family friend has a possible home lined up for it.

Definitely proved to be an interesting visit!

The locomotives have been well cared for, showing two different lubrication dates on the frames and wheels.

Not trying to pick on you but I still find it interesting that people WANT things to go to AoS, even when they don't know where the things are actually going. Maybe the locos are going someplace where they'll be well taken care of and can run everyday.

Either way, glad to see something is happening with them.

Received this today from sources back east regarding the Showalter equipment.
"The va central equipment is going away. the steam engines to ontario, the rf&p cars to vmt and the ex via cars to spencer. caboose is staying for now, would have to be trucked out if it left, something about its wheels"

My observation is that AoS is a haven for lost locomotives, and a really necessary haven in this age. That being said, I don't see a plan for restoring and operating the collection, which is what everyone secretly hopes for. If the unidentified Canadian purchaser has plans to operate 1238 and 1286, perhaps they'll be returned to CPR paint and colors. Taking them "home" strikes me as being a good thing, as it preserves two locomotives in their national land and allows JJ to seek other locomotives which are in dire need of a friend.

Well, I am glad the engines seem to be going to a good home (we hope, anyway), and the passenger cars certainly are. Am glad that Sally seems to be doing well, too (I understand she had been ill at some point). Age of Steam would have been a good home, but not necessarily the only one! Let's wish everyone the best.

I don't get it. If they are no longer going to AoS, what does AoS have to do with it?
