I could see Plasti Dip being an option in selective circumstances. Once cured by simply letting it set and dry, Plasti dip is remarkably resilient and able to hold up to abuse.

My experience with Plasti Dip is based on three years of myself and a friend both using it on our jeeps to blackout any "chrome". This includes emblems, antennas, and wheel rims. In those three years, both jeeps, which also function as our daily drivers, have been offroaded many times. The Plasti Dip has held up to almost anything we have thrown with little wear and tear. The one time that I can think of was a rock thrown from a gravel truck did manage to put a small nick in the plasti dip of my hood Jeep logo. A quick squirt from a plasti dip spray can and no one could not tell that the puncture was ever made as the new plasti dip blended into the old and automatically smoothed itself.

When we first starting using, plasti dip, we followed all the rules of normal painting. The last batch of jeep rims that my daughter did for me, she simply washed the rims with 90 proof rubbing alcohol and a rag, and then sprayed on the dip. She did not even bother masking off anything but the valve stem and block the bolt holes. She peeled the small amount of excess off that got onto the rubber after the dip dryed. Two days later we running the jeep through the back trails of the Smoky Mountains. A few months later and some weekend trips through some grown up fields of an abandoned farm to give her driving experience, the plasti dip is still not showing any wearing.

Clean up after applying is remarkable easy and if someone does change their mind, puncture the coating with a sharp pick and then tear off.
