Flying Scotsman passengers shocked as iconic train struck by DRONE following £4.2m revamp

The famous locomotive was travelling through the Yorkshire countryside when travellers were stunned by a loud bang from the rear

The Flying Scotsman was travelling on the North York Moors when the incident happened.

Passengers on the Flying Scotsman were terrified when a drone flew into the train on its way across the North York Moors.

Police are investigating how the drone managed to slam into a rear carriage of the train on preserved railway tracks between Grosmont and Pickering.

A huge bang stunned those on board, with many now voicing their concerns about drones and their safety.

Drones have been frequently used to record images of the Flying Scotsman which has recently been seen in public for the first time in more than a decade following a £4.2m restoration.

I take this seriously (and I can't believe it hasn't happened more frequently), but a drone can't compare to the helicopter that buzzed #765 outside of Gouldsboro, PA last summer. That was nuts.

In any case, my "responsible drone owner" friends have learned to fly the damn things before taking them trackside and know enough to allow room for error. There's ample evidence online that others do not feel the same dedication to safety.

IMHO (soapbox, please) it's not just safety but respect for the train and crew that should drive all responsible railfanning, airborne or not.

That said, the Scotsman-mania going on in the UK is something to behold. It's a unique occurrence, that's for sure.
