Indeed, a BIG JOB - many congrats to pulling it off. All internal funding or did you get a grant or two? All volunteers or did you have to hire experts for some things?

All donation funding and volunteer labor. We do have to contract out the fabrication of certain parts like drive shaft safety straps and the like but 90% has been done in house.

It does at least 'look like' though that this was a very early and well-proven design for wheel slip control - "all or nothing".

Interestingly, the wheel slip control is that used on the General Electric U25B. The two trucks are compared against each other via axle generators. If either slips, the brakes are lightly applied to that truck. If the slip continues, sand is applied to those wheels.

No trim of the torque converter circuit, or the Maybach engine's governor, at all? I guess the idea was to reduce the equivalent of 'porpoising' where overshoot correction would make slipping 'seesaw' from one engine to the other.

I assume the 'light application' uses the independent -- on the K-M how is this modulated for application and then quick release? Is the differential control also applied to preclude wheelslide when drifting?

Pardon me if I'm a bit fuzzy on this, but I understand that you have been able to acquire and install the proper trucks to work with the one prime mover still in the locomotive. From this post, it sounds as if you've begun work on that engine. Given that the engine has been inop since the camera car conversion, how involved would any restoration be at this point?

Both prime movers are still in the loco. The forward one had a failure and was partially open to the elements. It's overall complete condition is unknown from what I have asked in the past. It'll be curious to know at some point as it could provide good spare parts for the rear one.

The forward engine left bank's top end is a mess as it was disassembled by the SP. Being a double overhead cam engine, it's necessary to remove the entire cam bank in order to get to one cylinder head and after examining the failed #9 head, the parts were just set back in place. The left bank's top end is in excellent and complete condition. We have not looked into the crankcase as there are more important things to do. The engine could be used for parts but, we would rather leave it in its current condition as it tells a story.

Yes, the power would be reduced to run 12 if the throttle were above that level. Other than that, there was no change of power.

The application uses a separate relay valve for the application and release. It is controlled by a GE wheel slip detection circuit board. I don't believe the system could differentiate between wheel slip and wheel slide but I haven't really gotten into the wheels slip circuitry much - yet.
