Our back lot is getting more crowded. From left to right: Youngstown built Kling type hot metal car, GE 70 ton center cab, 2,200 KW Westinghouse Rotary Converter (in shed), Shunter No. 3 and in the foreground the new tender body for the J&L 58 made from a riveted scrap bin. In front of the hot metal train is the 40' radius curve of the J&L Narrow Gauge RR.

If you will note the solar panels on the converter building, those panels charge four 12 volt deep cycle batteries in the cab of the 70 tonner. The batteries are tied into an inverter which provides all of our electricity at the museum. No electric bills! I installed the batteries in the cab of the loco so they could also be used as starting batteries for one of the gensets, which will make 250 VDC power for the shunter. The stand alone solar installation has been in service for about three years and works great.
