Our 1971 French-built PCC from The Hague has a Westinghouse drum controller with circuit boards instead of mechanical relays. The single recurring problem involves a small fuse that is/was available off the shelf at Radio Shack.

Having experience with The Hague PCC constructed at the same time as the Boeing cars, one wonders why the US did not follow suit and use the European PCC.

PCC cars waste a lot of energy creating heat in motor control resistors. Modern solid state controllers use almost all energy in moving the car. Power savings alone justify using more efficient methods. Most PCC cars used the heat created to warm the car interior for passenger comfort in the winter but for the rest of the year that heat is wasted. Some PCC cars built for temperate climates, like San Francisco, did not have the heat use feature.
