Zinc Plating

Having run a 1940s hbm, I can only imagine what a pleasure a cnc version would be. I am almost surprised that you guys dont have one in the shop there, but considering how large they are and the cost of tooling it makes sense to ship it out to a local shop that has a duplicate capability.

We do have an HBM, but it certainly isn't a CNC machine with 130" plus of X axis travel!

That sounds like a monster to use. Were any finishing operations required on other machines? I would imagine with the right tooling and workholding they could do this in just a few major operations on the hbm.

My goal is to one day have machines large enough that I need clamps like that.

I assume the contract shop ran finishing passes with a ball nose end mill (or the indexable variant) after those photos were taken, right?

While I cannot answer definitely on zinc plating used on the FEC 148, Hot Dip Galvanizing was performed on DL&W 565 while at New Hope, work being done by Menair-Fetzer. The 565 was the project done immediately after completing the 148.

Very revealing photographs of a 21st century machining operation.

I'm curious about the "buffer" material used between the clamps and the work pictured.

The photos illustrate an example of using something other than metal (such as brass/copper/etc.)
to support a very large object. It's obviously a non-metallic protective shim [so to speak].

What is the material -identity- being used to protect the surface of the part being machined?
